I’m Too Woke to Like the Kardashians.

I had dinner with friends tonight, one of whom was wearing Kylie Jenner’s lipstick. The other friend asked if I had any of Kylie’s products, but before I could answer, my best friend said, “She hates the Kardashians.” Not true. I corrected my bestie’s statement by responding with “I don’t hate the Kardashians, I’m just too woke to like them right now.”

I’m not gon’ front like I’ve never watched their show or bought a product they’ve pushed in the past, but I’m not for them right now. The current social and political climate we live in has shifted my interests elsewhere. It just doesn’t feel right. There are way too many Black women out here doing great things for me to frivolously ‘like’ or support the Kardashians. I don’t want to watch them on TV,  I don’t want to see them here, there, or anywhere. It’s nothing against them (or is it?), but I just can’t right now. Maybe it’s the fact that they’re repeated cultural appropriators or just plain clueless sometimes.

I think the last straw was when Kim defended Jeffree Star over the summer, not knowing the egregious things he’s said about Black women. Like girl, you have two Black children at the crib, do your homework before you start defending a racist. So frustrating.

I’m not mad that they’re out here making money, but if I’m going to support some foolishness, it’ll be Love and Hip-Hop. At least we got Cardi B out of that.
