Don’t be Selfish, Pray for Somebody Else.

Last week I saw a balloon floating around campus. That wasn’t extraordinary, balloons lose their owners all the time. But this balloon was special. From the distance, I could see there was something attached to the string at the bottom, something that was probably keeping it from floating higher.

I’m gon’ preach this, just keep reading.

I’m nosy, so of course when I was close enough, I reached out to grab the balloon to see what was attached to the balloon; it was a piece of paper. When I got back to my desk, I opened the note from a student, that talked about being too shy to show her “true light” and stress over failing grades. Maybe she participated in a super deep balloon release with other students who were struggling with something and the balloon was supposed to carry their troubles away? I don’t know.

My first thought was to re-release the balloon, but then I decided I would keep it. I’d keep it as a reminder to pray for the shy, stressed out student, who attached a letter to the end of a balloon. Like all of us, she needed someone praying for her.

This whole balloon thing showed me that sometimes we need the prayers of others to help us out, even if we don’t know it. The student who released that balloon thought she was letting her issues float away, but instead, they floated to me. If the paper hadn’t held the balloon down, I would’ve never had the chance to pray for her. Sometimes our issues lead us to people who want to help us just because. So Imma pray for lil’ shorty. I probably won’t ever know who she is, but I have faith that God will help her overcome everything she’s dealing with.
