Ayeeeee! Keisha won the election y’all! No thanks to me though, I didn’t vote. Shame on me, I know, I know. Although I’ve lived in the City of Atlanta for eight years (blocks away from City Hall), I’m still technically a resident of Maryland. I’ll do better in my 30’s, I promise. I’m proud of sis, but nothing about Keisha excited or currently excites me, other than the fact that she’s a young Black woman and an HBCU grad, which doesn’t exactly qualify one to become mayor of a major U.S. city.
However, Atlanta is a very Black city– by demographic and by reputation (at least that’s what reality television has made us believe) and Keisha is Black. Does Atlanta need a Black mayor because many residents who need the most assistance are Black? Maybe. Do I feel good about a seemingly capable Black woman running my city? Of course I do. This mayoral race has been all about race and everything else it seems, like important issues, have been cast into the background. There was also a ridiculous amount of candidates vying for the position before the run-off that it was hard to know much of anything about any one candidate.
However you feel about who Keisha is as a leader is kind of irrelevant now, she’ll be the mayor of Atlanta soon. Unless Mary’s recount says otherwise. We’ll see.
