Bye Monique. Just Bye.

So Monique wants me to boycott Netflix because she’s turning down a $500,000 check? Bye girl. Y’all love to boycott something. OK, so there’s more to her story than that, but because I think her call for a boycott is ridiculous, that’s just what it is to me. If you haven’t heard, Netflix offered Mo a half milly to do a stand-up special. Doesn’t sound too bad right? That’s if you’re not comparing yourself to Amy Schumer, who received an $11 million payout for her special. But Mo girl, why are you comparing yourself to Amy Schumer? I’m not talking about who’s funnier, but who’s in demand. I’ve never seen one thing with Amy in it, but I know the lightest skinned folk love her right now. She’s everywhere. And in today’s industry, that’s all that matters.

Sure, Monique won an Academy Award, but that was for a drama, right? Sidebar, some disrespectful soul commented that maybe Netflix didn’t like the way she treated Precious lolol. And as much as I loved The Parkers, the show ended nearly 15 years ago. But, I think Netflix could have offered her at least $1M, especially with the drama around Schumer asking Netflix for more money, after hearing about Chris Rock’s and Dave Chapelle’s $20M checks for their specials.

On another related note, why must there be a boycott of everything? And why did Monique think she had the cultural pull or this situation was egregious enough for we, the Black People of America to stand behind a boycott of Netflix. It’s been proven that boycotts are effective, but in order to be effective, the cause has to be one people feel compelled to participate in. Y’all, I can’t even imagine myself logging into my Netflix account and clicking deactivate– for Monique and her declined $500,000 check. I think Mo went about this the wrong way, if she had just told us what happened, (without demanding a boycott), we would have been more outraged. She completely overshot and now most of us are focused on everything but what she says is happening here–racial and gender discrimination. Sigh.

So with that said, I wish Monique the best of luck with her boycott, but I’ll be watching from the sidelines.
