Note: This is for all of us who didn’t care about Marvel films before Black Panther.
So the new Avengers: Infinity War trailer was released today and I ain’t ‘gon lie, it looks epic. But mainly because there were T’Challa, Okoye, Shuri and Dora Milaje sightings in it. I was looking for T’Challa nem in that trailer like they owed me something, okurrrr? After watching the trailer and reading an endless thread of tweets about how fans are excited to see the film, it dawned on me that this is their Black Panther. By “their” I mean anyone who didn’t have the same visceral pride in Black Panther that we had. Apparently, Marvel fans have waited with bated breath for this film, just like we did for Black Panther. From what it looks like, every Marvel superhero ever (or at least most of them) are in the film, which I don’t think has happened before. Just like a movie like Black Panther had never happened before. You follow the pattern here?
Anyway, back to my original question, are we, the people of Wakanda going to see the new Avengers movie and any subsequent films that include the Black Panther, even if he’s not the main character? I don’t know. But what I do know is that I’m petty and don’t want to help another movie make it to the historic billion-dollar mark Black Panther recently reached. Avengers: Infinity War has already beat Black Panther’s advanced ticket sales record. I feel like Marvel is baiting us, they know we loved Black Panther and now, a month after its premiere, they’re just dangling the characters we love in our faces to see if we’ll bite (buy a ticket). Well played Marvel, well played.
I’m torn, I want to see T’Challa nem, but I don’t know if that desire is strong enough to support another Marvel film where he’s not the main character. What say you?
